As One Devil to Another by Richard Platt Review and Giveaway!

Review:
As one Devil to Another was a book that I never thought I would really enjoy! It is a book that reads as Correspondence and letters between two devils-- Uncle Slashreap and his student and nephew Scardagger. The perspective of reading letters from one devil to another was different I have to admit, but brilliant. I was cautious about the book and even wary, but then my fears were assuaged as it became more of a way to view the enemy's battle plans. I felt both challenged to not let certain tactics get me, but I also felt encouragement. It is not a frightening or horror kind of book at all. I found Richard Platt quite ingenious in the way he flips our matters of perspective and uses it to teach us indirectly of our faulty lines of thought. We inadvertently think one way and see the world through such narrow glasses that sometimes we forget why God has allowed events and things into our lives. We forget life is not about "us" being comfortable. We are in fact living our lives out for His glory and everything we come across here on earth is meant to prepare us for Eternity.

Platt seems to also discuss other matters relevant to us in today's world. Things such as grief, love, success and failure, artwork, television, etc. I rather enjoyed reading what a "devil's" perspective might be in reference to things like this.

The story line running throughout the book kept me reading. I am kept in suspense at how our enemy tries to take us down--and how they try to take the characters on in this book. I found myself reading in the wee small hours of the morning just to try to read as much as I could! It definitely kept my attention, and was something I wanted to tell others about. Richard Platt did a great job, and has opened my eyes to wanting to read more books by C.S. Lewis such as the ScrewTape Letters.

I quote from the book an example of insights I found refreshing:
The greatest problem humans have with petitionary prayer is one of perspective.  This involves both time frames and objectives.  They think mostly of today, or of the limited sphere of activity which they call their lives: the seventy or eighty years which to us and to the Adversary is indistinguishable from today.  The Adversary is thinking of eternity.  ....The Adversary is the Parent who knows what they need....

I would give this book 3.5 out of 5.  I enjoyed this book and found it an easy read.

Now for a Giveaway!  Giveaway will end May 14, 2012

a Rafflecopter giveaway From the Back Cover:
As One Devil to Another is an astonishing debut work that C. S. Lewis’s biographer and foremost Lewis authority Walter Hooper calls “a stunning achievement, the finest example of the genre of diabolical correspondence to appear since this genre was popularized by C. S. Lewis.” Enter into this chilling and diabolical tale, one that reveals the very tricks and strategies of Hell.

Through a series of letters between devils created by Platt, senior devil Slashreap trains his young protégé, Scardagger, to win an individual soul away from Heaven and into their clutches. As the devils plot their way to triumph, they reveal the spiritual dangers and risks we face in today’s society. Their frighteningly accurate perspective on issues such as contemporary technology and sexual mores is interwoven with timeless matters such as the power of prayer, the purpose of suffering, and the promises held out by Heaven . . . and Hell.

Destined to become a modern classic, As One Devil to Another is a brilliantly written, deeply unsettling perspective on twenty-first-century society . . . a glimpse of ourselves through the eyes of those who have embraced their underworldly existence.

About the Author: Richard Platt has been in love with words and the music of language all his life, but he did not begin writing until his early forties. He is a contributor to literary quarterly Slightly Foxed and was a finalist for a 2012 San Diego Foundation Creative Catalyst Fellowship for his one-man play, Ripples From Walden Pond: An Evening with Henry David Thoreau. As One Devil to Another, his first novel, is dedicated in grateful homage to C. S. Lewis. Richard and his wife, Susan, live in California.

CLASSIC ELITE QUICK KNITS Review

I quite loved the variety and selections of patterns included in this book.  As a medium-beginner knitter, I appreciate that the book incorporated various levels of patterns.  I have to admit that as far as Quick Knits go--knitting and finishing a project took me quite some time.  I tried out a Beginner's pattern and found that the directions can be a little confusing.  There were times in which a more clearer choice of words would have saved me a great deal of time!  I have found other quick knit books or last minute projects books easier and to be better suited for me than this Classic Elite Quick Knits book.

I would recommend this book for a more experienced Intermediate Knitter.  Though there are beginner's patterns, I still believe that it is better suited for a rather experienced knitter.  The pictures throughout the book are exquisite--and quite fun to browse!  I love that I can see what the finished product would look like.  So five stars for the quality and quantity of pictures!  This book contains 100 patterns which I think for a retail value of 24.95 is a steal.

Overall, I enjoyed using this book and when I have more experience in knitting and understanding the language jargon--I can expect that this book would be more of a "Quick Knit" book for me!

I would give this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars just because I felt that though the book was intended for all levels of skill would much rather be geared, again towards a more skilled knitter.
Value of book 5 out of 5 stars
Quality 4 out of 5 stars

Cravings {The Devotional} Review and a Giveaway!

What is Cravings? Now in the world there are many cravings --such as something sweet and creamy, salty and crunchy, etc.  But what today I am excited to introduce to you Cravings {The Devotional} kind!  Carey Bailey was inspired by God one day to create something truly nifty for moms who are swept away by the swift tide of motherhood.  There are periods in my life that I neglect my time with God, and sitting down with God seem so hard to do!  I feel like a Martha so often but I desire and crave to be seated at the feet of Jesus like Mary.

About the Author: Carey Bailey is a recovering perfectionist, wife, proud mama and Family Life director for her church in Surprise, Ariz. On the side she loves party planning, crafting, and pursuing her dream of writing. She has a degree in religion from Westminster College and writes at her blog at www.carebaileyonline.com.

My Experience:  In my life, Cravings {The Devotional} gives me a helpful bite of Scripture throughout the day--a sweet and sour Word from God if you will! A little bit of the sweetness that comes from the Bible as well as the sour tartness of a challenge too!  Each of the 40 cards come with a Bible verse or two and a little devotional to go along with it!  Personally I have found it nice to have a devotional geared to a mom who is "on the go" a lot.  I also find it refreshing to look up from my dish pit to see this little cupcake cheering me on with the Word and a little encouragement.

Amidst all my husband's miscellaneous gadgets and gizmos and my daughter's toys and other odds and ends, stands this delectable Craving.  It is sort of my piece among everyone's clutter.  I find that it is really nice claiming my own spot on top the window sill.

The cards are easy to read while I wash dishes and cook meals.  I have my Cravings in my Kitchen. The cards have a nice glaze on them that keeps them relatively waterproof.   I found that when my obnoxious and quite active cat jumped on the window sill the heavy cupcake which is actually quite stable was knocked from its place and right into my sink.  Lucky for him I was right there to wipe the cards down.  The cards did not suffer too much damage.  A few cards soaked in some water, but after pressing them and wiping them--I could not tell which ones got soaked!  But apart from my kitty knocking it down, I find that the cupcake holder is stable and nice and heavy.  I think that it would be great if I could get these cards laminated to really make them waterproof.  I would compare the finishing on them more like to playing cards--durable, good thickness to it, nice and slick.

Will this make a great gift?  Absolutely.  I would recommend this as a gift to those women and moms who are believers.  I feel that they would greatly benefit from Cravings {The Devotional}.  But I do have to say, I will not underestimate the power of God's Word and wisdom towards any person--His Word will not come back empty and void it will accomplish what it was made to accomplish!  But yes, this devotional was specific for Moms!  I know I have personally loved this devotional.  Not only has it helped me most every day, but it is nice having something womanly (utterly pink and obviously girly amidst all the other miscellaneous items that might be on someone's window sill!) and designed for moms in specific.  You can purchase Cravings {The Devotional} at the Dicksons Gift Shop.

Gorton's Seafood: Review and Giveaway {3 Winners!}

This is my first time trying out Gorton’s Seafood—so what our family tried out were their Original Batter Tenders.  Great big fish sticks they are in my opinion! This served us well especially on a day after church. I was not too keen of what to cook quick and fast that day, but I remembered we had Gorton’s Seafood in our freezer picked up a couple of days before.

Some things that I first noticed while shopping was the
  • "Gorton's Goodness" 100% Real Fish, No Fillers
  • NO MSG
  • Natural Omega-3

Our Sunday Meal!

Quick as you can say “Fish and Chips! Fish and Chips! Fish and Chips!” I heated up the oven and within about 15-20 minutes later we were sitting down to some Fish and Chips! I absolutely loved it when my husband chipped in by making some “homemade” tartar sauce. This was a fun easy meal to make with the family, and the batter of the fish had a nice crunch to it.  I was surprised at the crunchiness and superb taste of the Fish because in the past other fish do not have that great crunch as Gorton's does. So our compliments and recommendation to Gorton’s Original Batter!

Good Meaty Texture:
The texture of Gorton’s Original Fish Batter was quite nice. One can easily tell that it was real fish!  What is also great is that there are no fillers.  When you pulled it apart, one can see the meat “flake” off just as a real fish would do if one pulled it apart. I absolutely love that after pulling and cooling our Gorton’s Fish out of the oven that there was a definite crunch that I go to a restaurant for. I get great results without the use of a deep fat fryer!

Recipes and Food ideas for everyone, Gluten Free too!
We have yet to try out their Grilled Salmon, just bought some at the store, and am quite excited to try it for dinner or lunch with my husband! I will update without experience of Grilled Salmon. The cost to serve two people is not bad either it is under $6 for Gorton’s Gilled Salmon in our grocery store!  I appreciate the decent reasonable pricing as well as that they provide a great plethora of recipes and ideas for using their products.  Not to mention for anyone who has to worry about Gluten--Gorton's Seafood offers a selection of Gluten Free products.

I will come back shopping for their other products such as Popcorn Shrimp, Grilled Tilapia, and Beer Battered Fish!  Not to mention browsing their Recipe Collection gave me some easy meal ideas for the future.  Check out their website for a full list of Gorton's products!

Integrating Languages into Family time is Valuable and Fun: Lightning Fast Spanish Review

One aspect of being a mother is the fact that I am also her teacher! Growing up in a bilingual home was fun, but my knowledge and actual speaking of the my own language waned as I went into preschool and all the other children and teachers spoke one language, English. My Filipino tongue was lost to me as my family rarely spoke it at home to me!

Looking back, I kind of regret that I never grew fluent in my own native language, but now as I have my own family, I am endeavoring to teach and incorporate speaking different languages. I know the value of learning a different language. It is having the ability to relate with another person on a whole different level—because you are able to speak their language. Now, I am still working on my own Filipino roots, but thought that the Spanish and Filipino languages are quite similar and so I picked out Lightning Fast Spanish by Carolyn Woods.

Lightning Fast Spanish:

My favorite part aboutLightning-Fast Spanish for Kids and Families: Learn Spanish, Speak Spanish, Teach Kids Spanish - Quick As A Flash, Even If You Don't Speak A Word Now!  is that it is grouped and organized together nicely. There are sections or rather as she has named them “Conversations” dedicated to colors, animals, a walk outside, where are we going, and such as that fit into ordinary everyday life! I love it because it is easy to focus on a particular subject and spend a day just constantly working on that “Conversation”! I find myself printing out parts of her book and sticking it in my pocket as I do not know Spanish very well and cannot remember what I have read!

I am starting to make color flash cards for my daughter and I—it will be a fun activity for us today, and already I have gotten her to say “Rojo” for Red! I am very encouraged at how in just two minutes she was able to pick up the word! It was so precious. She said “ro ro” and then “ro ho”! I am super excited and am very encouraged that a toddler can pick up words quick!

  • For Breakfast time (Conversation #2):
I simply applied Lightning Fast Spanish into our Breakfast time, by reading over the Concepts and Vocabulary introduced in this section and setting before our daughter food items we were going to learn the names of. I made flash “cheat” cards to place on the table in front of me. As a part of the Spanish Conversation we were going to have I picked out the phrase “?Que hay desayunar?” and “?Quieres?”. Meaning What are we having for breakfast and Would you like?

My handy "Cheat" Cards I made!

It was quite fun and not overwhelming as a mom, and in a matter of time my daughter will know that there are two ways in which to express her want of a yellow banana---Amarillo Platano!

  • Fun Activities:
A fun game activiity that I play—as suggested in the book is something that I call Donde Esta….
meaning Where is the…? So I simply play Name the body parts! I find myself playing this game throughout the day with her. She can say “La Cabeza” meaning the head a little bit as it is a mouthful to say.

As my daughter gets older I would really love to be able to incorporate the Scavenger Hunt Game which is playing Donde Esta on a bigger scale and with things and items. Another game I cannot wait to play is Spanish Bingo! I personally am enjoying learning a new language and am taking advantage of my daughter’s young “learning to talk” age. As for my husband, he is not home quite as often to learn Spanish with us as he is working longer hours, but he sure approves of her speaking another language and is astounded at how little kids’ brains are geared! I do like this book and would recommend it if you want a fun way to incorporate a new language. The best ways to learn a new language is to use it, and this book really does help one learn and use it!

Carolyn Woods author of Lightning Fast Spanish:

I'm a busy mom of 4, and always looking for ways to do things better, faster, cheaper! I post reviews and blog about science fun, educational books, and family friendly activities ~Carol

Carol makes it extremely easy to incorporate a new language into every day life. She offers families a fun and non-overwhelming way to learn a new language. She has several other Lightning Fast Languages in this series such as Chinese, Japanese, French, German, and Italian. You can find her books on Amazon and are available on Kindle as well as a Paper back edition.
